Book Review: The Spider King's Daughter by Chibundu Onuzo

I finished reading it yesterday and I loved it. After some point I really didn't want to put it down, I kept wanting more.  Honestly I wish it didn't end but then what else could have happened. It's about "Runner G", a Lagos hawker that was born with a silver spoon but later looses it all as a result of his fathers death and "Abike", a rich man's daughter who is blind to so many negative things her father has done for his success and somehow it's all related to Runner G and others in his life. Somehow they meet and take a liking to each other and one thing leads to another to another and another... Of course Runner G wasn't prepares for all he was about to find out in this little relationship he had going on with Abike but later on it's all revealed somehow and the outcome is NOT Pretty!

I'm really not going to give it all away. I really loved it because there were bits and bobs I could relate to like liking someone and how it feels, the initial excitement. I also loved the nostalgic feeling I got when the author described Lagos and some little tings associated with us Nigerians, the broken english and so many other things. I be Edo babe but I'm a Lagos girl still, born and bred.

I really enjoyed the book and I really wasn't expecting it to end the way it did, the twist at the end was just perfect. I don't want to talk to much about it and spoil the story but I'd definitely recommend this book for you lot who are into reading. One of my goals this year was to pick up reading again and also writing, I'd say I'm doing well with the reading but the writing is coming along slowly.

Here's a little about the author who I have had the pleasure of meeting a few times, definitely a lovely person. Chibundu Onuzo was born in NIgeria in 191 and is the youngest of four children. She is currently studying History at King's College, London. When not writing, Chibundu can be found playing the piano or singing.

I got that from the book and it's straight to the point but if you want to know more then as I always say, google is your friend.

Book Description:The Spider King's Daughter is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet set against the backdrop of a changing Lagos, a city torn between tradition and modernity, corruption and truth, love and family loyalty. Seventeen-year-old Abike Johnson is the favourite child of her wealthy father. She lives in a She lives in a sprawling mansion in Lagos, protected by armed guards and ferried everywhere in a huge black jeep. But being her father's favourite comes with uncomfortable duties, and she is often lonely behind the high walls of her house.

A world away from Abike's mansion, in the city's slums, lives a seventeen-year-old hawker struggling to make sense of the world. His family lost everything after his father's death and now he runs after cars on the roadside selling ice cream to support his mother and sister.

When Abike buys ice cream from the hawker one day, they strike up an unlikely and tentative romance, defying the prejudices of Nigerian society. But as they grow closer, revelations from the past threaten their relationship and both Abike and the hawker must decide where their loyalties lie.

Get the book and read it guys I'm sure you'll love it.
